Many of the special items are released only for a month, and are purchaseable for US$2.50 per item. These items are often sold at a later date for over twice their virtual currency value, allowing users to turn their real money purchases into a large amount of Gaia gold. Other items are paid for with Gaia currency, which can be obtained by participating in games and forums on the website. The heart of Gaia, however, remains in its forums, where users post hundreds of thousands of posts daily.
